Luis O. de La Hoz, 43 is the Senior Vice President of the Lending Team at the Intersect Fund, a non-profit micro-lender and certified CDFI based in New Brunswick, NJ that provides training, coaching and capital to low-income, minority and women-owned businesses throughout the state of New Jersey. He was recently promoted due to his outstanding performance from Senior Loan Officer, a position he held since 2011, and Spanish Program Coordinator since 2010. His responsibility is to develop a portfolio of Latino entrepreneurs, small business owners and startups seeking capital, and help them develop a business plan and follow up on their operation through training and consultation to ensure successful outcomes.
Prior to his position at the Intersect Fund, De La Hoz moved to New Jersey to launch a tax preparation and financial services firm. He is a founding partner of MarMar Enterprises II and administrator of its New Brunswick branch. His office handled over 1,500 returns last year, more than any other un-franchised firm in
Before migrating to the United States from his native Colombia in the early 2000s, De la Hoz was involved in the hospitality industry. He was the National Marketing Manager of Paco Majo, in both locations Bogota and Medellín, and the Manager, Points of Sale, for Lebon Coffee Magazine. He started his career as the Sectional Director of the Health Cooperative in Manizales, Colombia.
When he is not engaging small business owners in training or funding opportunities, De La Hoz works tirelessly to help his fellow Hispanic entrepreneurs. He is a member of the board of the Statewide Hispanic
In 2010, he was appointed Chair of the Central New Jersey Small Business Council of the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce to address the needs of Hispanic business owners in the region. As a result, and under his direction, the Chamber hosted the first Hispanic Small Business Expo – Feria de Negocios Hispanos de Central New Jersey- on July 19, 2010, and two consecutive versions, the 2nd Expo in July 17, 2011 and the 3rd Expo on July 16, 2013. The Expo started with a very small group of exhibitors, and grew to 145 vendors and almost 800 attendees in the last year.
Since 2008, De la Hoz has been a consultant at The College of New Jersey Business Development Center, an organization that counsels over 600 established and start-up businesses and trains approximately 2000 business people with information seminars and hands-on management workshops.
De la Hoz is also a member of BNI International Hawks Chapter, a group of professionals working together to build business and referrals, where we won the Notable Networker Award in 2011 and 2012 in recognitions of outstanding team performance, referrals, visitors and closed business, and the Notable Networker Award in October and November 2010 Hawks chapter, for the number of referrals.
An social media expert and passionate blogger, De la Hoz has been an active member since 2010 and has excelled at LATISM –Latinos in Social Media-, the organization that gathers 140,000 bloggers throughout the United States and abroad. He is the Chair of LATISM13 Business Track to be held in New York City in September 2013 (#LATISM #Biztrack #NYC), and was part of the Speaker Panel at The Latino Entrepreneur
He also writes and manages his own blog, Latino Small Business Owners, where he provides useful information in English and Spanish for small business owners and entrepreneurs. De La Hoz holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Manizales in Manizales, Colombia, and a certificate in Management from the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. De La Hoz graduated from the Entrepreneur Pioneer Initiative from Rutgers on December 2012. He is a resident of Edison, NJ, where he lives with his wife Marcela and His Daughter Mariana.
